While this falls just short of the Climate Change Authority’s 65–75% recommendation, it is a significant step closer to aligning with the climate science.

Current policies are projected to deliver just over a 50% emissions cut by 2035, leaving a substantial gap that calls for deeper transformation across every sector of the economy, not just electricity and heavy industry. To close this gap, Australia will need to more than double its pace of decarbonisation and achieve emission reductions of up to 4.2% per year over the next decade. That means driving change at every level, from households and small businesses to major corporations and government institutions.

Encouragingly, the Albanese Government has shifted its approach, rebuilding public service teams and repositioning departments like Treasury and DFAT (Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade) to take a whole-of-government perspective. Still, meaningful progress will require significant upfront investment, and much of that leadership will need to come from government.
